Bald men are better?
It's that time of the year when the "bald men are better" research study appears in the news again!
The research was conducted by Psychologist Albert E. Mannes (surprise-he's bald), at the University of Pennsylvania. The study, which compiled information from 59 subjects (only), showed the participants multiple photos of men. The first photo featured a man with a full head of hair and the second one showed that same man with no hair. Most participants reported that they found the bald men to be more attractive overall.
However, having bald spots and some hair won’t do the trick. Men must go completely bald in order to be perceived this way. The research showed that men who had bald spots, were perceived as weak and less masculine.
Apparently, bald men are not just perceived as strong and sexy, they are seen as smart too. Researchers from the University of Saarland analysed data based on an opinion poll of 20,000 people and the results showed that bald men are more often perceived as older, but people see them as wiser and more intelligent.
Let’s all be honest for a second – nobody looks forward to the day that they look into the bathroom mirror and realise that they’re going bald. An ever growing spot at the back of your head, thinner hair or two more inches of visible forehead are not reasons to celebrate because we will be perceived as being older and wiser !
Funnily enough, yet another survey conducted by the John Hopkins School of Medicine surveyed 122 people and found that bald men were rated as looking younger, more attractive, successful and approachable after undergoing a hair transplant !
Do you agree with the results of these studies or maybe you can relate to it with your own personal experience? We find that for many men (AND more so for women), thinning hair and balding are a very sensitive topic - but how does hair loss happen in the first place?
Hair Loss
Male hair loss is almost always hereditary and usually starts in your 20’s. While hair loss usually occurs slowly over 15-25 years, in some cases the process can take as little as 5 years. Occasionally, hair loss in men can be caused by medication, stress, or a dietary imbalance. Most of the time, however, the cause of men’s hair loss is androgenic hair loss, also known as male pattern baldness.
During androgenic hair loss, the male hormone (DHT) causes hair follicles to shrink. Eventually, the hair follicles will shrink so much that they can no longer sustain hair, leading to hair loss.
Hair Loss Treatment Options
It’s easier to keep the hair that you have rather than try to grow it back. Therefore, it’s important to catch hair loss as early as possible and seek treatment right away. Once your hair follicle has died, sadly there is no cure.
Thankfully there are several cosmetic solutions and well as FDA cleared Low Level Laser Treatments which can give you the appearance of thicker, fuller hair.
So, do you want to be older and wiser or younger and more attractive? Personally, I’d just like to keep my hair…
